Künker sale 354, lot 5299

This specimen was lot 5299 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BADEN, BADEN-DURLACH, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1806 Grossherzogtum, Friedrich I. 1852-1856-1907. Vereinstaler 1865. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Frederick I, 1852-1907, union thaler of 1865. Very rare date, about uncirculated.)"

This is a scarce date of a type struck 1865-71. The prior type (KM 240) had the duke facing right and without a beard.
