Azores 1795 300 reis

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 22262

This specimen was lot 22262 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AZORES. 300 Reis, 1795. Maria I. NGC AU-58. A highly lustrous example with only a hint of light wear, this piece is augmented by a golden tone as one approaches the peripheries." The Azores, then as now a dependency of Portugal, generally had to make do with copper coins. In 1794-98, a series of 75, 150 and 300 réis were minted for the islands.
