This specimen was lot 3243 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "AZORES. 20 Reis, 1795. Maria I (1786-99). NGC MS-62 BN. Finest certified. Toned with natural copper luster and very sharp details." The Azores, then as now a dependency of Portugal, generally had to make do with copper coins. This twenty réis was issued 1790-96 and was accompanied by copper five and ten réis.
