Austria 1995 1000 schilling Fr-923
This specimen was lot 2162 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $675.62. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria. 1000 Schilling, 1995 NGC PF69 UC. Second Republic Anniversary. NGC graded Proof 69 Ultra Cameo." This commemorative is one of two issued in this denomination for 1995, the other honoring the Olympics. Confusingly, they are struck to different weight standards. The second republic, established in the ruins of Vienna in 1945, actively encouraged Austrians to consider themselves victims of Nazi aggression rather than enthusiastic accomplices.
Recorded mintage: 50,000 proofs.
Specification: 16.23 g, 0.986 fine gold, 0.5144 troy oz AGW, 30 mm diameter.
