This specimen was lot 23113 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $381.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 5 Groschen 1938, MS62 NGC, rare date and grade, lightly toned with noticeable mint luster." This issue was struck 1931-38 and is common except for this date. We surmise the disruption of the Nazi anschluss prevented the issue of larger numbers of this coin.
Recorded mintage: 876,000.
Specification: 3 g, copper nickel, 17 mm diameter.
