Austria 1913 100 corona
The first specimen was lot 30383 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $3,877.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Franz Joseph I gold 100 Corona 1913 MS61 NGC. A low-mintage date with moderate handling that mutes some of the reflectivity in the obverse fields, but few major marks that attract the eye. As is often the case, the reverse shows less handling that the obverse as a result of its broader design that serves to protect the fields. An example that is sure to be highly coveted for type set inclusion. From the Commander Collection." The second specimen was lot 3435 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$12,058 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. 100 Kronen 1913, Wien. Selten. Nur 2'696 Exemplare geprägt. (empire of Austria-Hungary, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, hundred crowns of 1913, Vienna mint. Rare. Only 2,696 specimens struck. NGC PL61 CAMEO.)"
This gold coin is among the last issued before Austria's suicidal plunge into World War One. The portrait is of Francis Joseph, emperor of Austria 1848-1916. The Austro-Hungarian empire did not long survive him. Regular 100 coronas were emitted 1909-15, with the 1915 being restruck in large numbers in recent times.
Recorded mintage: 2,696.
Specification: 33.87 g, 0.900 fine gold, 0.980 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter, the second specimen 33.86 g.
