This specimen was lot 31092 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $16,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria. Franz Joseph I gold Proof 100 Corona 1912 PR62 Ultra Cameo NGC, Vienna mint. A handsome rendition of this large-scale gold crown combining pinpoint striking precision with the handsome surface qualities of Proof production, resulting in a full and stunning cameo effect. Light hairlines in the fields are typical for the issue, with brightly mirrored fields conveying a sweeping visual impact." This gold coin is among the last issued before Austria's suicidal plunge into World War One. The portrait is of Francis Joseph, emperor of Austria 1848-1916. The Austro-Hungarian empire did not long survive him. Regular 100 coronas were emitted 1909-15, with the 1915 being restruck in large numbers in recent times.
