Austria 1878 ducat Fr-493
This specimen was lot 70285 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Ducat, 1878. Vienna Mint. Franz Joseph I. PCGS MS-62. This handsome near-Choice example displays a beautiful complexion of shimmering golden luster despite some contact consistent for the grade assigned." This type was struck 1872-1914 and is common. The SCWC notes that more were restruck after World War One but does not state which dates. No mintmark appears on this type. Gold ducats were struck throughout Franz Josef's long reign and come in many types.
