This specimen was lot 71566 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Florin, 1877. Vienna Mint. Franz Joseph I. PCGS MS-65. Blazing with mint luster, this Gem example is dramatically toned with gold, red, and cobalt blues. Tied with just one other example at PCGS, but far superior in terms of eye appeal." The florin superseded the old half thaler and was struck 1857-92 with various busts of Franz Josef. This date is common but the reported mintage seems outsize.
Recorded mintage: 13,963,000.
Specification: 12.34 g, 0.900 fine silver, 29.2 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-2222.
