Sincona sale 90, lot 1628

This specimen was lot 1628 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$872 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Ferdinand I. 1835-1848. Dukat 1841 A, Wien. NGC MS61. (empire of Austria, Ferdinand I, 1835-48, ducat of 1841, Vienna mint, graded NGC MS-61.)"

This type was struck 1837-48 at Vienna (shown here), Kremnitz ("B"), Karlsburg ("E") and Venice ("V"). The Venice mint issues are rare, the others are all common. Emperor Ferdinand was severely epileptic and considered unfit to rule. He was readily persuaded to abdicate during the revolution of 1848.
