Austria 1825-A thaler Dav-9
The first specimen was lot 710 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria, taler, Franz I, 1825-A, Vienna mint, PCGS MS62, finest known in PCGS and NGC censuses. Deeply toned over muted luster with wisps of adjustment marks near rim on reverse, apparently the finest and only example at PCGS (the only NGC example being just AU 53). Note: The Emperor's ordinal on this coin is I, as he was Franz I of Austria, but his more common title was Franz II of the Holy Roman Empire (until 1808), which is why some references attribute these coins to Franz II." The second specimen was lot 44035 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[2] noted, "AUSTRIA. Taler, 1825-B. Vienna Mint. Franz I. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. This Taler exhibits some remnants of bright mint luster in the protected areas, and cloudy gray toning throughout." This type was struck 1824-30 at Vienna ("A", shown here), Kremnitz ("B"), Prague ("C"), Günzburg ("G") and Karlsburg ("E") but is not rare. Thalers were struck to this weight standard until 1852.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, the first specimen 27.91 grams.
