Künker sale 406, lot 3876

This specimen was lot 3876 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €460 (about US$604 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz I. 1804-1835. Dukat 1806, A, Wien. Mit Bügelkrone. 3,44 g Feingold. GOLD. R Sehr schön. (empire of Austria, Francis I, 1804-35, ducat of 1806, Vienna mint, with horn. Rare, very fine.)

Nachdem sich Franz II. 1804 zum Kaiser von Österreich erklärt hatte, gab es in der Übergangszeit bis zur Aufgabe der römisch-deutschen Kaiserwürde 1806 ein Doppelkaisertum: das alte Wahlkaisertum des Heiligen Römischen Reiches und das Erbkaisertum Österreich. Auf diesem Stück wird dieser Zustand heraldisch verdeutlicht. Der österreichische Schild ist mit der österreichischen Hauskrone bedeckt, und über dem Doppeladler schwebt die alte Reichskrone. Es handelt sich also sowohl um die erste kaiserlich österreichische Prägung als auch um eine der letzten Münzen des Römisch-Deutschen Reiches. (After Francis II declared himself Emperor of Austria in 1804, there were two empires during the transition period until the Roman-German imperial dignity was relinquished in 1806: the old elective Holy Roman Empire and the hereditary empire of Austria. This situation is illustrated heraldically on this piece. The Austrian shield is covered with the Austrian domestic crown, and the old imperial crown floats above the double-headed eagle. This is both the first Imperial Austrian coin and one of the last coins of the Roman-German Empire.)"

This type was struck 1804-06 at four mints. This is the most common date of a scarce type. Another ducat of 1806 (KM 2168) dropped Francis's title of Holy Roman Emperor and had a different reverse legend ("LO·SAL·WIRC·"). The latter type is common.
