Austria 1785-A thaler Dav-1167
This specimen was lot 1209 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €600 (about US$826 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Joseph II (1780-1790), AR Taler, 1785 A, Vienne. D/ T. l. à d. R/ Aigle impériale éployée et couronnée. Très Beau. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1780-90, silver thaler of 1785, Vienna mint. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle displayed. Very Fine.)"
This type was struck at Vienna 1781-90 and should be more common than it is. It is rather scarce compared to the kronenthaler (Dav-1284) minted at the same time.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, this specimen 27,85 g.
