Austria 1783-A kronenthaler Dav-1170
This specimen was lot 4881 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €320 (about US$440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Joseph II., 1765-1790. Kronentaler 1783 A, Wien. Feine Patina, winz. Schrötligsfehler am Rand, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, convention thaler of 1783, Vienna mint. Fine patina, minor edge defects, about extremley fine.)"
This type was struck 1781-90 at Brussels (angel face mintmark), Vienna (shown here), Kremnitz (mintmark B, 1788 only) and Milan (mintmark M). The SCWC lumps them all as KM 32 but the Brussels issues (Dav-1284) have the mintmark on the reverse while the Vienna and Kremnitz issues have the mintmark under the bust (Dav-1170). The Milan crocione is catalogued as Dav-1388 but is the same coin. To add to the confusion, the convention thaler, which was lighter and lower in fineness, continued in production.
