Sincona Auction 103, lot 826

This specimen was lot 826 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 48,000 CHF (about US$73,152 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Leopold I. 1657-1705. 2 Dukaten 1687, Graz. Die Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1685 und 1684 geändert. Münzmeister Johann Anton Nowak. Äusserst selten. NGC MS64*. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, double ducat of 1687, Graz mint, 1687/5/4 overdate. Extremely rare, Finest certified by NGC.)"

This type is mentioned for 1672-87. The overdate shown here is listed in the SCWC as 1687/6 but we side with the auctioneers in calling it a 1687/5/4.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.98 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen 6.98 g.

Catalog reference: Herinek 192, KM 1276, Fr-320.
