Sincona sale 100, lot 1088

This specimen was lot 1088 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$24,115 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Ferdinand III. 1637-1657. 2 Dukaten 1655/3, St. Veit. Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1653 geändert. Münzmeister und Stempelschneider Hans Seel. FERDINAND·III - D·G - R·I·S·A·G·H·B·REx Der geharnischte Kaiser steht nach halbrechts, die Füsse reichen bis in die Umschrift. Rv. ARCHI·AVS·(TE)· - CARINT·D·B·I655 Gekrönter Doppeladler mit ovalem Brustwappen und Insignien, unten gekröntes Kärntner Wappen, beim Erzherzogshut kleines I - S. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich. Minimal gewellt. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, double ducat of 1655, St. Veit mint, 1655/3 overdate. Obverse: the armored figure of the emperor stands slightly right, his feet dividing the legend; reverse: crowned double headed eagle with oval arms and insignia, the crowned arms of Carinthia below, dividing the initals "I S". Extremely rare, Extremely Fine. Slightly wavy flan.)"

This rare type was struck 1646, 1648, 1652, 1653 and 1655. The St. Veit mint in Carinthia is also noted for striking kreuzers in 1655 (KM 873).
