Sincona sale 76, lot 1414

This specimen was lot 1414 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$3,884 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Ferdinand III. 1637-1657. 1/2 Taler 1638, Graz. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. NGC AU55. Hübsche Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, half thaler of 1638, Graz mint. Very rare, Extremely fine, Attractively toned.)"

This one year type is expensive, even for an Austrian half thaler, which are generally scarce. Other half thalers from Graz include KM 446 (struck 1623-27), KM 673 (struck 1627-29), KM 698 (1627 only), KM 710 (1629), KM 855 (1638 but in klippe format) and KM 1258 (1669, 1674-78, 1684, 1694, 1696).
