Austria 1619 thaler Dav-3314
This specimen was lot 1302 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (Irvine, July 2011), where it sold for $345. The catalog description noted, "AUSTRIA. Taler, 1619. Ferdinand II (1619-37). Half-length crowned armored figure r., title ARCHIDVX AUSTRIAE. Rv. Crowned Shield in Collar of Golden Fleece, Arms of Carinthia at center, legend ET CARINTH (Fleece) IAE. ZC. 1619. General type of Dav.8131 but Davenport does not show this coin's date. By 1619 this half-length figure design was distinctly outdated. Off-round, polished long ago. VERY FINE. Ex William Hesslein, October 1922." We hate to disagree with the hardworking compilers of the auction catalog but we feel this coin to be Dav-3314, recorded for the Klagenfurt mint in Carinthia for 1601-20.
