Austria (1619-32) ducat Fr-184
The first specimen was lot 1766 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,712 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HEILIGES ROMISCH REICH, Erzherzog Leopold V. 1619-1632. Dukat o. J. Hall. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. Leicht gewellt. (Austria, archduke Leopold, 1619-32, undated ducat, Hall mint. Rare, About extremely fine, Slightly wavy flan.)"
The second specimen was lot 103 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €44,000 (about US$6,231 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Leopold V., 1619-1632. Dukat o. J., Hall. Der geharnischte Erzherzog steht r. mit Erzherzogshut, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff, umher Blätterkranz//Der Heilige Leopold steht v. v. mit der Fahne von Alt-Österreich und Kirchenmodell, umher Blätterkranz. GOLD. RR Min. gewellt, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Gerhard Hirsch 132, München 1983, Nr. 486. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Leopold V, 1619-32, undated ducat, Hall mint. Obverse: armored and capped figure of the archduke stands with sword and scepter, leafy wreath around; reverse: St. Leopold stands facing, holding the flag of Old Austria and a model of a church, surrounded by a wreath of leaves. Very rare, slightly wavy, extremely fine.)"
Leopold was among the last of the Hapsburg archdukes permitted to strike his own coinage. He never mounted the throne as emperor. This issue is probably KM 771 but might be KM 620. Both are rare.
