Künker sale 406, lot 4450

This specimen was lot 4450 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand I. 1522-1558-1564. Guldentaler (60 Kreuzer) 1564, Klagenfurt. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Austria, Ferdinand I, 1558-64, guldenthaler of sixty kreuzer of 1564, Klagenfurt mint. Very scarce in this quality, handsome patina, some planchet defects, extremely fine.)"

This guldenthaler was one of several struck in Austria in the early 1560's (Ferdinand died in 1564). More were struck at Kuttenberg, Vienna, Thann, Prague and Joachimsthal. The guldenthaler would soon be shortened to gulden and its weight slide from five-sixths to about two-thirds of a thaler.
