Austria 1559 thaler Dav-8013
This specimen was lot 4668 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €550 (about US$757 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand I., 1522-1558-1564. Reichsguldiner (72 Kreuzer) 1559, Wien. Sehr schön. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. Erworben 1952 aus der Sammlung H. Welek. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand I, 1522-1558-1564, guldiner of 1559, Vienna mint. Very fine.)"
Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteenth century. This type was struck 1558-60. It varies from the very similar Dav-8012 by having a double headed eagle instead of the single headed eagle used heretofore. The Dav-8028 from the Hall mint also shows a double headed eagle and Ferdinand with a beard.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 31,01 g.
