Künker sale 263, lot 1465

This specimen was lot 1465 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Ferdinand I. 1522-1558-1564. Taler 1557, Prag. Münzmeister Ludwig Neufahrer. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, min. Randfehler, vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand I, 1558-64, thaler of 1557, Prague mint, mintmaster Louis Neufahrer. Rare, attractive example with toning, small edge cracks, extremely fine.)"

Davenport lists this type for 1557-58. Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteenth century. Prague, of course, was in Bohemia but was run by the Hapsburgs as an ordinary branch mint.
