Austria (1531-48) thaler Dav-8014
This specimen was lot 1530 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,347 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand I. 1522-1558-1564. Taler o. J. (nach 1530), Linz. R Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, fast vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand I, 1522-64, undated thaler (after 1530), Linz mint. Scarce, very attractive example with beautiful patina, about extremely fine.)"
This particular type is a very early thaler, and is a product of the Linz mint. Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteen century. This coin is undated but is likely from Ferdinand's tenure as king of Rome (1531-58) but issued before he adopted a beard in 1548.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.75 g.
