Australia 1922 florin
This specimen was lot 2223 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Florin, 1922-(M). NGC MS-63. Lovely high grade example with strong eye appeal from the attractive golden apricot and sky blue hued tones covering the entire surface with strong luster beneath. A few light bag marks consistent with the grade which do virtually nothing to detract. Among the higher graded examples available with only a handful of pieces graded higher." This type was struck 1911-36 at London, Heaton, Sydney and Melbourne. The dates prior to the late twenties are scarce, especially in nice condition. This is a scarce date despite the substantial mintage. Australia maintained the sterling silver standard until 1945, years after Great Britain had debased her coins to 0.500 fine.
