Sincona sale 66, lot 1037

This specimen was lot 1037 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$527 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"AUSTRALIA | misc. Victoria, 1837-1901. Sovereign 1892 S, Sydney. Jubilee head. Gutes vorzüglich. Winzige Kratzer. (Australia, Victoria, 1837-1901, sovereign of 1892, Sydney mint, jubilee head. Good extremely fine, Tiny scratches.)"

This "jubilee head" type was struck 1887-93 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints. The shield reverse used 1871-87 was retired. The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1919. The facility was closed in 1926 as old and obsolete.
