Sincona sale 59, lot 1034

This specimen was lot 1034 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$424 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Australien, Victoria, 1837-1901. Sovereign 1891 M, Melbourne. Jubilee head. Gutes vorzüglich. (Australia, Victoria, 1837-1901, sovereign of 1891, Melbourne mint, jubilee head. Good extremely fine.)"

This "jubilee head" type was struck 1887-93 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints. The shield reverse used 1871-87 was retired. The Melbourne mint was opened in 1872 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1916.

Recorded mintage: 2,749,000.
