Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72492

This specimen was lot 72492 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Sovereign, 1890-M. Melbourne Mint. NGC AU-58 Prooflike. A charming example, that displays strong prooflike quality, despite some contacting on the highest elements of the design." This "jubilee head" type was struck 1887-93 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints. The shield reverse used 1871-87 was retired. The Melbourne mint was opened in 1872 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1916.
