Augsburg 1635-BS ducat Fr-59
This specimen was lot 3919 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"AUGSBURG, STADT, Dukat 1635, mit Titel Ferdinands II. St. Afra. GOLD. Kl. Kratzer, min. gewellt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Augsburg, ducat of 1635, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Hairlines, slightly wavy, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1629-31 and 1634-37 in the name of the emperor. Another ducat was struck in 1635 with the bust of the deceased Gustavus Adolphus (Fr-113). Wikipedia comments, "Saint Afra (died 304) was martyred during the Diocletian persecution. Along with Saint Ulrich, she is a patron saint of Augsburg. Her feast day is August 7." The initials "BS" are buried in the tail feathers of the eagle.
