Aruba 1999 100 florin
This specimen was lot 44007 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARUBA. 100 Florin, 1999. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. "TRADITION WITH VISION". A technically perfect and brilliant Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." Aruba, along with Curaçao and Bonaire, lies off the shore of Venezuela in the Caribbean. For centuries a colony of the Netherlands, agitation for independence began in the 1970's as locals resented perceived domination by Curaçao. Arubans voted for independence in 1986, to be granted in 1996, but the process was halted when the oil refinery there closed, halving government revenue. This NCLT honoring Amerigo Vespucci and the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Aruba, was accompanied by a 25 florin in silver (KM 18).
Recorded mintage: 1,100 proofs.
Specification: 6.72 g, 0.900 fine gold, 22.5 mm diameter.
