This specimen was lot 70236 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARUBA. 50 Florin, 1991. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate the anniversary of independence. A flawless Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." Aruba, along with Curaçao and Bonaire, lies off the shore of Venezuela in the Caribbean. For centuries a colony of the Netherlands, agitation for independence began in the 1970's as locals resented perceived domination by Curaçao. Arubans voted for independence in 1986, to be granted in 1996, but the process was halted when the oil refinery there closed, halving government revenue.

Recorded mintage: 2,600.

Specification: 6.72 g, 0.900 fine gold, 22.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-1; KM-9.
