Aruba 1992 25 florin
This specimen was lot 3165 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 24 € (about US$31 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Aruba. 1992. 25 florines. Juegos Olímpicos - Barcelona '92. Windsurf[ing]. AG. Proof." Aruba, along with Curaçao and Bonaire, lies off the shore of Venezuela in the Caribbean. For centuries a colony of the Netherlands, agitation for independence began in the 1970's as locals resented perceived domination by Curaçao. Arubans voted for independence in 1986, to be granted in 1996, but the process was halted when the oil refinery there closed, halving government revenue.
