This type, struck 1962-68, honors the gaucho, the Argentine cowboy. The coinage was reformed in 1970, 1983, 1985 and 1992. Argentina was to suffer from bouts of hyperinflation for the next forty years, impoverishing a once prosperous region.

Recorded mintage: 36,588,000.

Specification: 4.9 g, nickel plated steel, 23 mm diameter.
