This type, struck 1961-68, honors the Sarmiento, a sailing ship operated by the Argentine navy as a training vessel. The coinage was reformed in 1970, 1983, 1985 and 1992. Argentina was to suffer from bouts of hyperinflation for the next forty years, impoverishing a once prosperous region.
