Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 517
JE164-0517r.jpg

This specimen was lot 517 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €130 (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ESPAGNE, ARAGON, Pedro de la Huesca (1094-1104), AR dinero, Jaca. D/ PETRVS REX T. nue à g. R/ Croix aragonaise entre deux points, dans une fleur, entre ARA-GON. Légères traces de corrosion. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of Aragon, Pedro de la Huesca, 1094-1104, silver dinero, Jaca mint. Obverse bare head left; reverse: Aragonese cross between two pellets over a flower, dividing "ARA-GON". Lightly pitted, Fine - Very Fine.)"

Cayón calls this coin an "Obolo" (half a dinero) but the weight suggests otherwise. It comes with the head right (Cayón-1768) or head left (Cayón-1769, shown here) or with "MON-SON" on the reverse instead of "ARA-GON" (Cayón-1770). This dynasty of Navarrese kings ruled 1035-1162.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen is 0,86 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-1769, Crusafont 213.2.
