Sincona sale 18, lot 1216

This specimen was lot 1216 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 180 (about US$237 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Vereinstaler 1863. Berlin Vereinigung der Herzogtümer. Fast FDC. (Anhalt-Dessau, union thaler of 1863, Berlin mint, on the union of the duchies, choice uncirculated.)"

This commemorative honored the merger of Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Bernburg. In 1871, with the successful conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War, the currency was reformed to use pfennig and marks and the taler was dropped, tho it remained legal tender at three mark until the 1880's.

Recorded mintage: 50,000.
