Anhalt-Bernburg 1862-A thaler

formerly in the Wildman Collection

This type was struck 1861-62 only and is not common. Mining thalers were issued in several German states to honor the activities of those busily enriching the prince by providing him with silver to spend. Anhalt-Bernburg issued an earlier type of mining thaler 1846-55. The crowned bear walking on the wall is a pun on Bernburg, which means "bear city" in German.
