Sincona sale 38, lot 1025

This specimen was lot 1025 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$390 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Mahmud I. 1143-1168 AH (1730-1754) 1/4 Sultani 1162 AH (1748). Jazâir Sehr schön. (Algeria, Mahmud I (1730-54), gold quarter sultani of 1748, Very fine.)"

The sultani may have been intended to compete with the Venetian ducat familiar throughout the Mediterranean but we doubt the bey had access to enough gold to make a serious dent. Very similar half sultanis from Tunisia also exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.75-0.85 g, gold, this specimen 0.75 g.
