This specimen was lot 1024 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Murad III. 982-1003 H. (1574-1595) Sultani 982 H. (1574). Jazâir. Sehr schön. (Algeria, Murad III (1574-95), gold sultani of AH 982, Very fine.)"
It is doubtless rare. It may have been intended to compete with the Venetian ducat familiar throughout the Mediterranean but we doubt the bey had access to enough gold to make a serious dent. Very similar sultanis from Tunisia also exist.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, gold, this specimen 3.48 g.
Catalog reference: Pere 264. Fr-9.
