Stephen Album sale 43, lot 428

This specimen was lot 428 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "ALGIERS: Mahmud I, 1730-1754, AV ¼ sultani, Jaza'ir, AH1154, a superb mint state quality example! NGC graded MS63." Friedberg lists no gold coins for Algeria prior to Mahmud II (r. 1808-37). The sultani may have been intended to compete with the Venetian ducat familiar throughout the Mediterranean but we doubt the bey had access to enough gold to make a serious dent. This type was struck years 1144-1168 plus 1171 (posthumous).

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 0.75-0.85 g, gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-26, KM-18.
