Algeria AH 1172 sultani
This specimen was lot 31854 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ottoman Empire. Mustafa III gold Sultani AH 1172 (1758/9) AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Jazair mint (in Algeria). A very rare late North African gold type in general, accentuated even more so by this apparently unpublished date absent from both the MacKenzie and Wilski collections. Despite the light noted cleaning, the piece appears highly attractive with a perfectly centered strike free of weakness." This type is listed in the SCWC for AH 1171-1185. This example realized four times the catalog value for a common date. The state of Algiers survived mostly by piracy.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 3.23-3.41 g, gold, this specimen 3.41 g.
