Sincona sale 38, lot 1023

This specimen was lot 1023 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,159 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Republik, seit 1939 200 Leke 1969. Kopf der sogenannten Göttin von Butrinto. Selten. Nur 200 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. FDC. (Republic of Albania, two hundred leke of 1969, head of Göttin von Butrinto. Scarce, only 200 pieces struck, choice proof.)"

This non-circulating legal tender commemorative was struck in Italy as Albania has no facilities for such a thing. The SCWC shows only a drawing of this type.

Specification: 39.49 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 39.03 g.
