Agramunt 1643 dinero
During the course of the Thirty Years War, Spain found herself at war with Cardinal Richelieu's France. Philip IV's chief minister, the conde-duque of Olivares, attempted to impose new taxes on Catalonia and Portugal to cover the cost; both regions immediately rose in revolt. Portugal managed to secure her independence under the Braganza dynasty but Catalonia was eventually reconquered in the 1650's after the French withdrew their aid. This fifteen year rebellion was known as the War of the Reapers and was the occasion for many local issues. Agramunt, a town in the province of Lleida in central Catalonia, issued this copper dinero in the name of Louis XIII of France, who had assumed the title of count of Catalonia. The SCWC mentions several dineros for Agramunt (KM 5 and 6) but they show the bust of Louis whereas this example shows a fleur-de-lys planted on a hill. This device appears on the city arms.
