Afghanistan SH1306(9) 2-1/2 amani
This specimen was lot 1475 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Amanullah, 1919-1929, AV 2 1/2 amani, SH1306 year 9, toughra in wreath // mosque; one of the rarest modern Afghan denominations; mount removed, choice XF, RR, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection." This rare type, struck SH1306 only, was equal to 25 Afghan rupees or not quite 22½ Indian rupees. Coins of this period are sometimes dated on the traditional Muslim calendar, or on the Solar Hegira calendar, as here, which starts on the same date as the traditional Hegira calendar but uses solar years rather than lunar years.
