Afghanistan AH 1347 habibi KM-899
This specimen was lot 1478 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Habibullah Ghazi, rebel, 1929, AV habibi (30 rupees), AH1347 (1928), a superb lustrous mint-state example! PCGS graded MS65, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection. Habibullah Kalakani or Habibullah Ghazi, an ethnic Tajik, was derided by the Pashtun as "Bacha-ye Saqao", literally son of the water carrier, and was the ruler of Afghanistan from January 17 to October 13, 1929, and was also a leader of the Saqqawists. During the Afghan Civil War, he captured vast swathes of Afghanistan and ruled Kabul during what is known in Afghan historiography as the "Saqqawist period." No country recognized him as ruler of Afghanistan." Habibullah Ghazi was eventually captured and executed by his rival, Muhammed Nadir Shah.
