Stephen Album sale 50, lot 1479

This specimen was lot 1479 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Muhammed Nadir Shah, 1929-1933, AV 20 afghanis, AH1348 (1929), a wonderful lustrous mint-state example! PCGS graded MS64, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection." This type was struck AH 1348-1350 and is scarce like most Afghan gold coins. Coins of this period are sometimes dated on the traditional Muslim calendar, or on the Solar Hegira calendar, as here, which starts on the same date as the traditional Hegira calendar but uses solar years rather than lunar years.
