Afghanistan SH1301 rupee
This specimen was lot 3600 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $78. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Amanullah, 1919-1929, AR rupee, SH1301, a lustrous example, 'cleaned', PCGS graded UNC details, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection. Although marked 'cleaned', which is not the case, this example has, in our opinion, excessive die polish marks only." Coins of this period are sometimes dated on the traditional Muslim calendar, or on the Solar Hegira calendar, as here, which starts on the same date as the traditional Hegira calendar but uses solar years rather than lunar years. This type was struck SH 1299-1303.
