Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74125

This specimen was lot 74125 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN. 1/2 Rupee, AH 1295 (1878). Sher Ali. PCGS MS-63. A strikingly toned representative of this uncommonly offered issue hailing from the reign of the Barakzai dynasty, the surfaces wholly Mint State and decorated with hues of magenta, cobalt, violet, and pale greenish gold." This hammered type is noted for AH 1295 only. Numerous varieties exist (KM 207, KM 208, KM 413, KM 514). This example realized fifteen times the catalog value. Milled coinage was introduced to Afghanistan during the reign of Abdur Rahman (1880-1901).
