Steve Album sale 51, lot 2279

This specimen was lot 2279 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "DURRANI: Taimur Shah, 1772-1793, AR rupee, Kashmir, AH1187 year one (ahad), couple light scratches on the reverse, otherwise quite attractive and a rare early date for Taimur at Kashmir, VF, R." Taimur Shah struck rupees at Peshawar (KM 703), Kashmir (KM 563, shown here), Derajat (KM 353), Mashhad (KM B640), Multan (KM 653) and Herat (KM 383.2). This mint is known for regnal years 1 thru 20 (AH 1187-1208). Taimur Shah was the second Durrani king and had to contend with rebellious tribal chiefs and the Sikhs, who had seized Multan, Lahore and Sindh. He left many sons, who fought among themselves for the throne while the kingdom broke up.
