Iran AH 1203 rupi KM-B640
This specimen was lot 76476 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN. Durrani. Rupee, AH 1203 (1788/89). Mashhad Mint. Taimur Shah. NGC AU-50. An appealing Rupee, this Durrani issue from Mash[h]ad displays bold details with rich allure and a generally pleasing brilliance." Taimur Shah, second ruler of the Durranis, is listed in the SCWC under Afghanistan. Mashhad, the capital of the northeastern province of Khorasan, served as a buffer between the Zands in Iran and the Durranis in Afghanistan. This type is listed for AH 119x and AH 1201-1207.
