Sincona sale 91, lot 3027

This specimen was lot 3027 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,700 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Aargau, 5 Batzen 1814, Aarau. Schräg geriffelter Rand. Von grosser Seltenheit. Sehr schön-fast vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Aargau, five batzen of 1814, Aarau mint, obliquely reeded edge. Of high rarity, Very fine-about extremely fine.)"

This five batzen was struck 1812, 1814 and 1815. Only the 1815 is readily available. No coinage for Aargau exists prior to 1798, when it was admitted as a canton to the confederation.
